Rheumatoid Running

He runs because he has to.

Because in being a runner, in moving through pain and fatigue and suffering, in imposing stress upon stress, in eliminating all but the necessities of life, he is fulfilling himself and becoming the person he is.

– George Sheehan

Chased by my training partner Werner Brandt. Nike/OTC 1979.

I prepped for the Bar Association 5K

by getting out of bed at 6 a.m. on a Saturday,

walking the dogs in the dark,

then driving into town to provide

some crowd noise at the finish line

of the County Library 5K

a few weeks earlier.

Recently, made an appearance at the Library

and I have, believe it or not,

a new friend

who is a prosecutor.

You live long enough,

you can’t imagine all that happens.

Podium finish!  Placed third.

Threw my arms around

the two faster men

in a group hug

and soon we were

jumping up and down

chanting,

me in the lead this time:

“We’re not dead!

“We’re not dead!!”

“We’re not dead.”
