How To Feel Better And Smarter Sooner

If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.’ – Martin Luther King Jr.

First came the idea, which kinda snuck up on him far too late in life.

You don’t have to stay the way you are, which doesn’t seem to be working so good for you anyway.

Change is possible.

Next came the “being” –  Wild Dog.  Who he actually was.  Not what he’d been trained to be.  Who he had to be.

Had to change the mindset.

Then came the name – Barker Ajax.  In order to become a better person, he had to change his identity.

In his own head.

Kicked myself in the ass with a change in behavior.  Took much longer.  Decades actually.  A quick study and a slow learner.

Restarted constantly.  Goes on and on.

You will recall the Code of The Wild Dog, a simple 12-step program.

Do yourself a favor.  No Whining.  Defy the odds.  Act now.  Break loose.  Adapt your game.

Do the work.  Stand for something.  Amaze yourself.  Assist the victims.  Quit for good.

Become your own hero.

Talk yourself into it.

When I finally realized I didn’t fit in anywhere, knew I had to stop trying.  In a world of square holes, a round peg.

Later, in the dog run, the old man imagined himself lithe and limber, something of a tai chi master, as he stretched and turned to pick up another large pile of turd.

These theories work, people.  Life is better as a fun game.  Look at this from The New Yorker.

Does the universe hate you, or are you simply coming at it the wrong way? What if, like Jason assembling his Argonauts, you made a competition of your needs and claimed your obstacles as part of an elaborate game? You have some strategies:

  1. Challenge yourself.

  2. Collect and activate power-ups.

  3. Find and battle the bad guys.

  4. Seek out and complete quests.

  5. Recruit your allies.

  6. Adopt a secret identity.

  7. Go for an epic win.
