The Fly

The fly ought to be used as the symbol of impertinence and audacity;
for whilst all other animals shun man more than anything else,
and run away even before he comes near them, the fly lights upon his very nose.
– Arthur Schopenhauer
Even as you and I.
Barker Ajax saw the point.
Like so much of Schopenhauer,
good philosophy
but shy on terrestrial application.
Questions seem unanswered.
Is Vincent Price offended by the fly’s breath?
That a fly in a man’s suit
or a man with a fly’s head?
And what about those hand-thingies?
He convinced his little brother
the horse fly came from horse shit.
Like so much of Schopenhauer.
Everybody knows
all those eyes won’t help you see
what is really there.
Right in front of you.
Like the movie.
For your own good,
we urge you not to see it alone.
You have been warned.
It’s in Terror-Color, for goodness sakes.
Like the truth.
