Doggedly Cedar Key

Reality is one of the possibilities I cannot afford to ignore. – Leonard Cohen

Used to go to Key West. Many miles away, eight hours, likely longer, expensive it seemed several years ago. An all-night party town unnecessary for folks in bed by ten.

Cedar Key, maybe ninety minutes drive. Everything feels thirty percent cheaper. More fun, less expense. Not to mention wear and tear on my ass.

We were told, now this is back a decade or more, Cedar Key was, umm, ‘rustic’ in a sense. No Wal-Mart, No McDonald’s. So, we made a list of things to bring with us.

Bug Spray….

Beer. Wine.

Snacks…

What do we like we can eat cold?

Or microwave….

Headache pills. (am & pm)…

Sunblock….

Hats….

Shoes we can get wet. We thought we might kayak.

CASH.

Back in the day, the Locals were credit-card resistant. But the folks here are nothing if not ‘adaptive.’ For instance, don’t try to convince them climate change ain’t real.

Blue roof at bottom, we stay there.

Actually, the deck of our room is over the water. You can toss in a line from your chair. Couple of suites below us. One weekend, a white man and his son were fishing off the deck of one suite below and a black man and his son were fishing off the deck of the other. Guessing the fish don’t know the difference.

Our room is like a houseboat without the rocking and rolling. Just the slapping of the waves..

More interesting than cable news and often quite similar.

Known as “Norma’s Cove” to us, where I spread my mother’s cremains.
