I was a big fan as a child of Al Jolson and Emmett Kelly and nobody of color lived in our town until I was like fifteen.
Had no idea blackface was this appalling.
At least to Democrats.
Never thought Virginia suburbs’ Washington Redskins was racist. Until a man with red skin told me so.

Had a Jewish girlfriend once – I’m no anti-Semite – who moved to Iowa and the farmers’ wives came by to see if it was true, Did the Jewess have a tail?
That was some fifty years ago, back when people like me were backward and stupid. Or didn’t know any better.
